Anatomy of A Tweet

Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters, known as “tweets“.

According to Wikipedia, Twitter has,

“…over 500 million registered users as of 2012, generating over 340 million tweets daily and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day. Since its launch, Twitter has become one of the ten most visited websites on the Internet, and has been described as “the SMS of the Internet.” Unregistered users can read tweets, while registered users can post tweets through the website interface, SMS, or a range of apps for mobile devices.”

Twitter has come a long way since it’s launch in 2006. Initially styled as an ‘SMS for the internet‘. Twitter built on the established ‘txt-speak‘ of SMS, but, being born of the Internet, Twitter was able to, quite literally, deliver so much more: URLs, TwitPics, etc…

Twitter is a broadcast medium – everything you put out there has the potential to reach far and wide across the web and across the globe! But perhaps the times when Twitter has been at its most significant is when has been drawing communities in. Through the creative use of Hashtags, gathering Tweets and their Tweeters together; conferences goers have been networking across World as well as across the room; TV and Radio has been revitalised through through live-tweeting; communities gather for #EduChat, #TechChat, #QRChat and more…
